Orange County Adds Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Santa Ana and Orange

Orange County will soon install fourteen Electric Vehicle Charging stations for both County employees and the public.

At its August 27th board meeting, the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved a five-year contract with ChargePoint, Inc. to install Electric Vehicle Charging stations at three County parking structures to augment efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality for residents. The contract also includes funding for additional charging stations as demanded.

“Electric cars are entering the mainstream, especially among younger drivers,” said Supervisor Andrew Do. “We need to make sure Orange County is equipped with enough electric charging stations to meet the growing demand.”

Statistics project that in 2026, electric vehicles will account for 7.6 percent of the market, up from 1.2 percent of the 17.2 million light vehicles Americans bought in 2018.

California was the first state to launch the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) program, a state regulation that requires automakers to research, develop, and market electric vehicles, which generate fewer global warming emissions than gas-powered cars and do not produce tailpipe pollution, leading to cleaner air.

“Installing more electric charging stations will further promote the use of electric vehicles among our residents, thereby improving air quality and protecting our environment,” said Supervisor Do.

The new stations will be subsidized predominantly by the state of California, while individuals who use the charging stations will cover the operation costs.

In order to optimize the use of the electronic stations, the County developed a pricing plan designed to cover energy costs, transactions fees, and regular equipment maintenance. While the new stations will be installed in County parking structures, most will be available to the general public.
