County Approves Permanent Financing for Veterans Housing Project

On Tuesday, the Orange County Board of Supervisors secured permanent loan financing for Potter's Lane, the County's new housing project for homeless veterans built out of recycled shipping containers in Midway City.

Now that construction has completed and the entire building is leased, the County has secured permanent financing to repay the short-term construction loan.

"This funding is the final step in the Potter's Lane development, ensuring this project will serve our veterans here in Orange County for years and years to come," said Supervisor Andrew Do.

This project was brought to fruition in less than 18 months and has many first-of-its-kind features. All 15 units are built out of recycled steel shipping containers made by GrowthPoint Structures which makes them both cost effective and eco-friendly. This has been a collaboration between the County of Orange, American Family Housing and many other community partners.

Potter's Lane houses eight chronically homeless veterans with household incomes at or below 30% Area Median Income. Seven units house homeless individuals at or below 30% Area Median Income, of which two units are prioritized for homeless veterans less than honorably discharged through the Orange County Continuum of Care.

"Giving back to our veterans doesn't stop just because we've provided them a place to stay. Housing is one part of a Continuum of Care that also includes mental health, job training, educational opportunities, and other services," said Supervisor Do. "Our veterans have given so much to us, it is our turn to give back to them."

The facility will provide full wraparound services to veterans on-site. The modular housing development is also meant to foster a sense of community and togetherness among the residents through the use of common spaces encouraging social interaction.

Potter's Lane serves as a model for future developments and is a clear example of Orange County's commitment to ending homelessness.
