• March 31, 2020 – I began recommending face coverings.

• April 5, 2020 – I shared a video on my social media platforms, with the help of residents, on ways people can make their own homemade face coverings.

• April 2, 2020 – The County of Orange followed California State guidelines for wearing face coverings in public.

April 7, 2020 – I authored Orange County's first mask requirement for all food service workers in Orange County, including pharmacy workers, which failed. I was one of the first officials in the state to propose a face covering mandate.

April 21, 2020 – Based on my April 7 proposal, the board considered and passed a mandate requiring face coverings for workers who interact with the public, this was a split 3-2 vote.

June 18, 2020 – Governor Newsom issued a statewide face covering order.

July 22, 2020 – I launched the #MaskUpOC Educational Campaign to enlist the public’s help to encourage responsible face-covering.

  • March 10, 2021- The County of Orange has opened a COVID-19 Mobile Clinic vaccination site at Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove. (Press Release)

  • March 9, 2021- On Tuesday, March 9, 2021, the State of California announced that Orange County (OC) has achieved one week of improved metrics according to the California Department of Public Health’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. (Press Release)

  • March 8, 2021- Orange County reopened the Disneyland Vaccine Super Point-of-Dispensing (POD) as a drive-thru site with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) lanes to allow for individuals to receive in-car vaccinations. (Press Release)

  • February 27, 2021 - - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted an Emergency Use Authorization for the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. (Press Release)

  • February 26, 2021 - Football, soccer, baseball, cheerleading, and other outdoor sport competitions may resume with modifications in Orange County. (Press Release)

  • February 25, 2021 – The State of California has dedicated a minimum of 10 percent of vaccine supply to K-12 school staff and child care workers, or an estimated 75,000 vaccines per week. (Press Release)

  • February 18, 2021 - The Orange County Health Care Agency opens a new Super POD site at the Anaheim Convention Center to administer second doses of the Moderna vaccine. (Press Release)

  • February 18, 2021 - The Disneyland Resort Super POD site will close temporarily, due to a lack of vaccine supply. Severe weather across the country has delayed the delivery of COVID-19 vaccine supplies across the State of California. (Press Release)

  • February 8, 2021 - CalOptima’s Board of Directors approved an action to accept a direct allocation of COVID-19 vaccines from the Orange County Health Care Agency (HCA) on behalf of contracted health networks that will handle the vaccine administration to vulnerable CalOptima members who are 65 years or older.   • December 5, 2020 - The Southern California Region dropped below the 15 percent Intensive Care Unit (ICU) capacity thereby triggering the state of California's "Regional Stay-at-Home Order." (Press Release)

  • December 3, 2020- California health officials today announced a Regional Stay at Home Order that will be triggered if Intensive Care Unit (ICU) capacity drops below 15 percent in a given region. State health officials are tracking the state by five regions: Northern California, Bay Area, Greater Sacramento, San Joaquin Valley, and Southern California. (Press Release)

  • November 19, 2020- Non-essential businesses and personal gatherings are prohibited between 10 PM and 5 AM beginning Saturday, November 21 at 10 PM. (Press Release)

  • November 18, 2020- Orange County rolls out at-home COVID-19 test kits to residents in Santa Ana and Anaheim. They will have access to 11,000 at-home COVID-19 saliva test kits. (Press Release)

  • November 17, 2020- Orange County allocates $1 million to expand outdoor dining capacity. Restaurants can apply for a $1,000 grant through the OC Restaurant Outdoor Dining Grant program to implement or expand outdoor dining capacity. (Press Release)

  • November 16, 2020- Effective immediately under the order of Governor Newsom and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the County of Orange was moved into the Purple Tier, the state's most restrictive tier. (Press Release)

  • November 13, 2020- As COVID-19 cases continue to increase across the country, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued travel advisories urging visitors entering California or returning home from traveling outside the state to self-quarantine to slow the spread of the virus. (Press Release)

  • August 31, 2020 – Governor Newsom has signed legislation to protect millions of tenants from eviction and property owners from foreclosure due to the economic impacts of COVID-19. The new law includes targeted protections for tenants to shield them from evictions through February 1, 2021. (Press Release)

  • August 28, 2020 - A new blueprint for business sector re-opening was unveiled by Governor Newsom, which includes a color-coded, tiered system that will use two metrics to measure the novel coronavirus: spread rate and test positivity percentage. (Press Release)

  • August 26, 2020 - In a unanimous vote by the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Clayton Chau, M.D., Ph.D., was selected as County Health Officer. Dr. Chau will serve as the Director of the OC Health Care Agency (HCA) as well as County Health Officer. (Press Release)

  • August 25, 2020 - Starting August 26, the County of Orange will be opening a second large-scale testing operation at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.   • March 24, 2020 – The OC Health Care Agency confirmed the first death in Orange County related to COVID-19. The individual was a male in his 70s with underlying health conditions. (Press Release)

  • March 24, 2020 – Effective March 25, parking lots at all County beaches, regional parks, and wilderness parks, County trailheads, pedestrian access points to all beaches, restrooms, playgrounds, exercise equipment, and shelters at all County parks and beaches will be close to slow the spread of COVID-19.   • March 22, 2020 – Due to Governor Newsom’s activation of the National Guard to assist in food and supplies distribution, the Cold Weather Emergency Shelters located at the Fullerton and Santa Ana National Guard will be relocated by March 24. (Press Release)

  • March 22, 2020 – The County identified Joplin Center in Trabuco Canyon as a placement site for sheltered homeless persons who are older but not exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19. (Press Release)

  • March 21, 2020 – The County announced that testing for COVID-19 is now available in a number of public health, commercial, and hospital laboratories in California, however broad-scale testing is not available.   • March 17, 2020 – Orange County’s Public Health Officer, Dr. Quick, issues Public Health Order

  • March 16, 2020 – Drive-thru COVID-19 testing sites are happening in Orange County. There is still discussion among private health providers to establish their own “drive-thru test sites” and locations are not under County’s control. Despite the name, these potential sites do not process the tests themselves; they are actually specimen collection centers for patients referred by doctors because the patients exhibit symptoms of the Coronavirus. As information becomes available, we will inform the public as quickly as possible.

  • February 26, 2020 – County of Orange and County Health Officer Dr. Nichole Quick declared a Local Health Emergency in accordance with state law to enhance the County’s ability to prepare for and respond to the potential Coronavirus cases in Orange County. (Documents and Press Release)

  • February 25, 2020 – Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously directed the Office of County Counsel to file an Amicus brief in support of Costa Mesa’s action. (Press Release)

  • February 24, 2020 – OC Health Care Agency issued a statement of support for the City of Costa Mesa’s legal action to temporarily halt a plan by state and federal agencies to use the Fairview Developmental Center as a Coronavirus quarantine location. Orange County Board of Supervisors Chair Michelle Steel and Vice-Chairman Andrew Do filed an Amicus brief in support of Costa Mesa’s action. (Amicus Brief)
